Geek type stuff

This may turn into national blog posting day! Two posts in one day, and I have more to type if I get the chance too.

I have updated browsers and it comes with a built in spell checker! That is one thing I have wanted for this blog. Not much of a spell checker as much as a type checker. My spelling may not be perfect, but it is the typos that I can’t stand. I do know the number of times I have had to edit posts to correct typing. It’s a small thing, but means a lot to me.

I have had some fun this week updated the apps on my flash drive. I primarily use portableapps.com and it is amazing how well they all work. The handiest of them is the email client, Mozilla Thunderbird. I can check email anywhere now and it not even be a hotmail account!  I maxed out my 512MB drive a while back and upgraded to a 2GB drive a while back. I have not done a whole lot until this past week. I reloaded all the apps, installed a menu and backup system as well. It may not be much, but I had a fun time doing it.

Here is a list of apps that are currently on my drive:

  • Mozilla Firefox Portable (browser)
  • Mozilla Thunderbird Portable (email client)
  • Nvu Portable (web editor)
  • XAMPP (Apache, mySQL, PHP, phpMyAdmin and more)
  • Sudoku Portable
  • GIMP Portable (Photo and image editor)
  • Gaim Portable (IM Client)
  • Audacity Portable (audio editor and recorder)
  • VLC Media Player Portable (uhhh…media player)
  • OpenOffice.org Portable (word processor, spreadsheet, presentations with Microsoft compatibility)

Okay, that’s the list of apps along with the menu system and backup system. All of those, except XAMPP, can fit on a 512 MB key and have room to save files. XAMPP takes up about the same amount of space, plus my own stuff, I am using a 2GB key. I took files from work home last week and had 42MB free. That was a shocker. I quickly offloaded and deleted extraneous information. I really enjoy the ability to do a couple of things from anywhere, without having to worry about whether or not the apps have been loaded. I only use about half of the apps now, but I have room to grow and learn more. Now if I can just get AutoCAD portable. Not a chance, really need open source to modify it to become portable, there may be some open source CAD programs out there though, have to look into it.

Update: I have found, well RC found two years ago, an open source CAD program that may work out.  It is QCAD.  I will be playing with it when I have the chance.  It is worth a shot at least.
