Insomnia Part 1 – Cubscouts

Well, it is about 5:20am and I have been up since about 3:45ish. I may have given up on sleep, so I thought I may as well catch up on the blog…..

Last weekend Trey and I went camping with Pack 303. We had a great time and I even got better sleep than right now too! We packed up and left Saturday at about 2:30 or so. It was just a one night trip. The campsite was close, maybe even too close. I did not know exactly where it was, and was feeling a little stressed. My directions were similar to “where we camped last year”. I did find it and started seting up camp.

My big mistake was not spending 10 aditional minutes at the house getting my fishing gear ready. I really should have done that, but again was feeling stressed for time. My second mistake was not stopping at Stuff-Mart to get Trey some fishing gear. We really have not had the chance to fish much, so I have never gotten him a rod. Yeah, I am a bad dad. We did borrow some tackle, so we did fish, but I should have stopped on the way.

I got the tent set up and sleeping arrangements made by 4:30 or so, we ended up getting there at about 3:20. Yes I should have spent the extra up front time. Trey ran around and made a new friend Jackson while I was ‘working’. I remembered to bring our fold up chairs, so those were out in front of the tent. I sat and relaxed while the kids played. Trey actuall played inside the tent for maybe 45 minutes after I was done with it. He also wanted to show it off too. He was so proud of that tent. It is just a backpacking dome tent that I have had since at least 1990. (I remember using it for a week long camping trip then. Sodamn Insane invaded Kuwait during the trip.)

We had dinner at about 6:30. We just packed up a cooler with food stuffs and had more of a lunch. (Thanks Honey!) We need to get a better camping stove to really cook during camping trips. After dinner the Cubmaster ran through the requirements for Trey to get his fishing belt loop, then we did a night hike. It was dark now. We all picked buddies and went looking for night animals. We carried flashlights and looked for eyes glowing back at us from the trees and we also found about 10 really big spider webs. They were really neat. Never saw any glowing eyes though.

After the hike it was quiet time. The adults sat around while the kids ran around camp like banshees. Yep, pretty quiet. At some point the kids went off on their own to tell ghost stories. I just sat around with the adults getting rather chilly. The low was going to be around 50, not real cold. I did not bother to bring a sweatshirt, should have. 50 is cold when the sun is down. 50 is great when the sun is up. The topic of conversation ranged from “Princess Bride” to Monty Python. I just sat quietly not knowing how to enter the conversation.

It was now bedtime. Trey was sad (he wanted to stay up), but we both fell fast asleep. I got a decent nights sleep (better than now) and Trey slept pretty well too. Trey did inch himself out of the sleeping bad at some point and woke up cold….wonder why. I put him back in the bag and we both slept. Breakfast was pancakes and sausage cooked by one of the Dens. It was a good meal. Coffee was good, and I warmed up quickly after the sun rose. We broke camp, fished some more, and joined Mom for lunch at Jason’s Deli. The last thing we did was go by Stuff-Mark and get Trey a fishing rod.
