Mean Time Between Failure
Well it has happened again. Hard drives die. This time I am getting I/O errors connecting to the drive, so the physical platters may be just fine. This is the replacement drive that I got in November 2008. So the replacement drive lasted about 15 months. The original drive lasted 11 months. MTBF is 1.2 million hours according to Seagate. Well, they are lasting longer at least, this one lasted about 11,000 hours. This next drive I get from them should last at least two years at this rate. I am getting the proper documentation ready to send this back to them and get another replacement drive. My plans for the server are pretty grand, but the two 500GB hard drives are all I really need at this rate, but adding another hard drive may make sense as well. Most functions on my server need two drives, so it is very limited at this point. Well, that and the fact that it is powered down too. That is pretty limiting as well.
